Pushing myself isn’t something I could always do. Especially pacing myself. To be honest, I totally suck at that and end up in either extreme — burnt out or not reaching my goals, and then in both cases, I end up stopping almost all training and struggling during the hike or whatever I had planned to train for.

But the Peak Performance Program was amazing, especially the guidance from Kate herself, which she delivered in the most loving and respectful, but very determined way. For the first time, I accomplished a dream hiking trip and felt so much pride in what I (and my body) could do. Just wanted to write to thank you so much for the program - I know I’ve thanked you before, but I just completed a pretty intense hike that involved a ton of scrambling (so many rope and chain sections!), and over 1km in elevation within like 6kms of distance.

Not only was I able to keep up, I was at the front of my group on both the ascent and descent, had a comfortably heavy pack, and I’m… not sore at all today! I had been incredibly anxious for the entire hike, but especially for the scrambling and the descent and I 100% attribute a lot of that to this training program. I am so much more confident and am able to actually enjoy the hikes I go on (this one had a ton of swimming holes and cliff jumping, and I was able to take advantage without tiring myself)!

The Start to Summit Program was brilliant. It took all the guesswork out of prepping for Denali. Every session had a clear purpose, especially the load-carrying sessions, and I could feel myself getting stronger each week.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on our side. We decided to turn back just short of Windy Corner due to… High winds. High winds being gusts over 55mph. Despite the wind, I knew I was ready.

I found Kate on Instagram and reached out for some advice about prepping for the West Buttress Route on Denali. From the very start, Kate strategically set out a very mountain-specific training plan and adapted everything to suit me and, most importantly, get me fit enough for Denali! We focused a lot on mindset and cold adaptation as those were the two areas I was most concerned with.

In the build-up to Denali, work became increasingly stressful and it became difficult to manage working hours plus my training schedule. After a distressed message to Kate, she adjusted my training schedule so that it was more manageable without compromising on my fitness for Denali. It was a make-or-break moment for me and Kate flawlessly guided me through it and helped me refocus on what was important—days in the mountains, not in the office.

Kate was instrumental in every aspect of my preparation and provided the positive and energetic kick up the arse every time I started slacking or skipping sessions. I’d recommend this program to anyone venturing into the high-altitude world, whether that’s Kilimanjaro or the likes of Denali.

Prior to working with Vertical Performance, my preparation was haphazard and incoherent. I’d get longer hikes when I could, but this was never consistent enough, and I was never prepared enough when the time came to join a trek.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to join the Peak Performance Program and work with Kate, and the opportunity just seemed too good to miss. I have not regretted taking that final step.

The biggest improvements I’ve had so far are:

Even though I’m not training for anything specific, I’ve been really enjoying the training and felt good progress. It’s refreshing to take a different approach to my fitness routine. Vo2 max is no joke.

During those Z5 and LT efforts, I’ve been able to settle in and zone out. I don’t experience that desperate feeling of “when is this going to be over” anymore.

We also did a backcountry trip into Yellowstone last week.I felt really strong on the hike. The biggest difference that I felt was using my glutes on the steep climbs and that I still had a lot in the tank when the longer hikes were done!

I was joining an expedition led by one of the most famous and accomplished mountaineers in the world, and I had so much fear of failure and about not training in the right way, and I wanted to be the strongest version of myself on the Aconcagua expedition.

I came to Vertical Performance/Kate after training 3 months on my own. I had fears I was over or under-training and I knew that on my own I was not getting out of my comfort zone to do all the necessary training.

I successfully summited Aconcagua and I honestly don’t think I would have made it without Kate’s physical and mindset training. I ascended the Canaleta repeating Kate’s mantra “outlast” and reached the summit and safely descended the entire mountain back to base camp after summiting – it was a continual 31-hour journey from Camp 2 to the summit and back to base camp. That is the POWER of Kate’s training – endurance, mental toughness, being unstoppable.

Successfully climbing Aconcagua was a crowning achievement in my life, but the biggest success from that journey is that Kate helped me see myself and believe in myself as an athlete and a mountaineer, and that if I train my body and my mind in the right way, I am capable of anything. 

My decision to train for Aconcagua with Kate was the best investment I have ever made in myself and in my mountaineering aspirations.

I summited Cotopaxi just after sunrise on New Year's Eve. Your training proved to be spot-on. I was fully physically prepared for the task. I wasn't even sore afterwards. I also think all the mobility work really helped with making the movement in heavy mountaineering boots (Nepals) and crampons a non-issue.

I mean I didn't have to think about the movement, I could just do it, without extra effort, if that makes sense. I am so very grateful! Thank You!

My training prior to Kate's mountain coach training was more triathlon focused, my background. This works for endurance but not sport specific for mountain climbing. This change in focus made a big difference, allowing me to focus on a specific target, a very big mountain. 
 
Kate’s program was the perfect challenge for a mountain climbing adventure, especially one as difficult as Aconcagua. Training was tough, not just the exercises but the sequence and the super sets. They really pushed me. I have the drive and desire but needed more direction in my training. Kate's training did exactly that for me and I am very appreciative. 
 
I knew Aconcagua was significantly harder than any physical activity I have done before. I knew I needed more help, Kate's training did exactly that, it was sport specific.

We got to 6600 meters on the summit attempt but could not pass through the thick layer of snow safely on la Canaleta, so sadly we had to turn around. Of the 10 people I was one of the 4 that made it to 6600 meters and felt that I could have summited. My endurance and fitness was on point every day (except the day of the altitude sickness).

I know I could have summited if it weren’t for the guide turning us around because of the snow, so the training really paid off!

I've sometimes found the mountains to be quite exclusive and inaccessible to me. Heck, they didn't even offer women's versions of the gear I needed when I was starting out.

Just wanted to update you after my trip. I completed the Salkantay Trek in Peru with a women’s group I met up with. I did awesome! I completed the whole trek without any bailouts. I think there were ONLY 5 of us (out of a group of 15) that did the whole trek without bailing out.
I was one of the most in shape women and didn’t have a hard time on the trail at all. There wasn’t a single moment when I didn’t think I could do it—your training and this program helped me make that happen!

I had decided to get back into mountaineering and climb Aconcagua after almost a decade of devoting my free time to kids, pets, etc. I made some progress training on my own, but it was inconsistent and felt inadequate. Kate was the obvious choice for me as I had read her book the previous year and gained so much from it.

The training plan she set for me was divided into three phases over 6 months and helped me manageably and realistically move from basically zero fitness to what I needed to climb Aconcagua. She continually adapted it as I got fitter and pushed me on a weekly basis to improve my mindset in incremental yet powerful ways.

Today was epic! Going up was amazing. Felt really really strong. The ropes section I did so well too!!!! Going down was another story…. My guide was a bully and wouldn’t let me down climb. I was really really scared facing outwards and just trusting my feet. The conditions were also super icy because it rained last night. But overall I would say it was epic…. I knew going down was a weakness and just so happy I felt strong going up!!!!

Before teaming up with Kate, my approach to high-altitude training was as haphazard as a wanderer without a map. Cardio sessions here and there, following gym instructors' suggestions, but lacking a defined objective. It felt like scaling a mountain with no summit in sight. 

Nutrition was a similar story, a repetitive cycle lacking purpose.

After trying out several pre-made plans without achieving my desired results, I realized I needed a more personalized approach. I craved for a coach who could provide me with tailored training and ongoing communication. That’s where Kate came in. Her 1:1 coaching has been a game-changer for me. I've experienced firsthand the power of personalized guidance in delivering tangible results, something that prebuilt programs simply can't match.

Before delving into results, I believe it's crucial to provide context. This year, the paramount summit to conquer is my health. I vividly recall expressing to Kate during one coaching session that my pinnacle for the year was reclaiming life's equilibrium. For me, Mont Blanc, my final objective, symbolized reaching its summit and reclaiming the spaces lost amidst life's chaos to nurture my mind, soothe my emotions, exercise, and nourish my body properly.

One of the biggest things I didn’t expect from an online program was the sense of community. Through the group calls and the WhatsApp group, I met people I’m still friends with today—even from my very first program.

What’s great is that it’s not only Kate giving advice. You hear from others doing different programs, learn from their experiences, see what equipment they choose and why, and sometimes speak with people who are preparing for the same route or mountain as you. That shared knowledge genuinely helps you prepare.

I work full-time in the humanitarian sector, and when I come home, I don’t want to spend time wondering what training I should do or whether I’m doing the right thing. With Kate and this program, my job is clear. All I have to do is show up and follow my training plan.

A really good example of how the training showed up for me was during the Camino de Santiago. I was presented with two route options—one longer and flatter, and the other shorter but much steeper with significant elevation gain. Without hesitation, I chose the more physical route because I trusted my body and knew I had it in me.

Having that structure, support, and a place to ask questions—especially when life throws curveballs—has been invaluable.

I joined the Peak Performance Program while training for Breithorn, my first 4000m peak. I wanted a structured exercise and diet plan, a group of other people as a support network, and Kate’s expertise even down to the minute details of the challenge.

Along the way, injuries and ill health meant things didn’t go as expected, and I had to become flexible and adapt. Hearing from and talking to others about their experiences, along with the emotional support and belief from Kate when things were tough, had the biggest impact on me.
The Breithorn was a short but tough challenge, made harder by my lack of consistent training, but I always knew I would achieve it—if not on my first attempt, then at some point. If we dismiss how hard something is – “oh, it’s not so bad” – we minimize the challenge and our strength in overcoming it. If we focus only on how hard it is, then we sow the seeds of fear and doubt. I have never, ever in my life been a sports person. I’m a books person—an intellectual, an academic. That’s who I am. But life brought me to a country [Switzerland] where physical activity is such an important part of belonging, and I realised I didn’t have the endurance, strength, or mobility to do the things I wanted to do or be a part of the way of life here.

After breaking my ankle, I felt disconnected from my body. Physiotherapy wasn’t enough—I needed something more to keep me consistent and moving forward. I even tried to train for Torres del Paine on my own, which, looking back, was insane. That’s when I found Kate.

Up until that point, I hadn’t seen anything like her. Her work was targeted, specific, and connected to exactly what I needed—to be stronger in the mountains. Even the small details, like lacing techniques and blister prevention, showed me how deeply she understood this world.

I reached out to Kate over instagram and she quickly responded by email and with a follow up call. I had tried an online training program from a well known high altitude training company before but it felt generic, I couldn’t talk to anyone, ask any questions or voice my concerns so having that first call was a really important aspect for me.

Kate is a real person who I could talk to and share my experience, concerns and work/life/kids balance. I felt understood and that she really took into account my concerns and the previous disappointing experience that I had had with a different coach. Approaching 70, I sometimes reflect on how movement has shaped my life. It didn’t start with mountaineering. It started with running. For years, I ran—just ran. No cross-training, no strength work, just miles and miles of pavement. And I loved it. But bodies have limits, and mine eventually protested. Injuries crept in, forcing me to pause, to reassess, to wonder if my running days were over.

That pause led me to something unexpected: hiking. At first, I saw it as a consolation prize—something to do because I could no longer run. But somewhere along the way, hiking became more than just a substitute. It became a passion. Moving through mountains, feeling the rhythm of the trail beneath my feet, breathing in the vastness of nature—I was hooked.

Still, I never imagined I would take it further. Climbing a mountain seemed like an impossible dream, something for younger, stronger, more experienced climbers. But when the opportunity to climb Kilimanjaro came, I couldn’t ignore the pull. That’s when I found Kate.

Kate didn’t just train me—she transformed me. I had always avoided push-ups, and I never cross-trained. Strength training wasn't part of my routine, but Kate made sure it became one. She built a plan that wasn’t just about fitness; it was about resilience.  Training alongside younger climbers was humbling, but their energy fueled me. Instead of feeling out of place, I felt inspired.

Summit night on Kilimanjaro was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But I had trained for this. I reached into my “cookie jar” (I love this metaphor from Kate) of past struggles and reminded myself: I had been here before, pushing through pain, through setbacks, through limits I thought I had. Step by step, I made it. Standing at the summit wasn’t just about conquering Kilimanjaro—it was about proving to myself that I still belonged in the mountains.

But my story isn’t over. I know mountaineering is not in my future, but I know this: if I can trek, I am happy—even at 70, the journey isn’t finished. It has just begun!

Physically, I have never been so fit. Even during the trek on Kilimanjaro, I didn’t experience muscle pain, soreness, or real fatigue. I felt strong and capable every step of the way.

I was also afraid of altitude sickness. Even though you can’t predict or control it, the program made me feel secure and prepared, which gave me confidence in how I handled the altitude.

Because I felt so well prepared in every little aspect, I could let go of everything and simply enjoy the experience. I didn’t have to worry—I could be fully present.

The last few steps to reach Uhuru Peak, Roof of Africa, Kilimanjaro mountain, were the most exhilarating and peaceful steps I have taken towards a summit, conquered with great dignity and grace.

All in all, it was a great experience but summit day for me was the most challenging. I was physically able to do it, but the cold and altitude were the bigger challenges. It was -15c (5f) with 40kmph (25mph) nonstop wind gusts. I experienced some altitude symptoms but they were mild, so we continued and were able to summit. Things got better once we started our decent.

I completed Kilimanjaro back in 2019 without a coach. When I compare my performance of that climb vs Island Peak.. well it's not really comparable if I'm honest. As a full-time working mom to a 1-year old, I was worried about training for a highly technical mountain like Ama Dablam, unsure if I would have enough time to train. But Kate did her magic and made it work. She adapted my training schedule to my busy mom life, making sure I would be able to train in between motherhood and work. And when things got really tough, she got extra creative and even managed to combine my training with childcare (by carrying my daughter in a hiking backpack for my Z2 workouts!).

When I started her program I thought, “what have I gotten myself into?” These workout sessions with heart rate zones were hard! I was not consistent in the beginning, but the Zoom Q&A calls on Tuesdays were a great motivator to get me going to the gym and really working hard to keep my exercise in my heart rate zones.

The calls were not only the best way to learn about training but to share the struggles we were going through and cheer one another on! When one of us completed a trek or expedition, celebrating was huge! These are very meaningful meetings that should not be missed.

I trained with Kate for one year, and when it was time for EBC there was NO DOUBT I WAS READY for the challenge!!! Our trek to EBC took 8 days and it was the hardest and coolest thing I have ever accomplished in my hiking career! I did it. I honestly didn’t think I would! I was so scared of all the unknowns, but during the trek I was at the front of the group the entire time. I never felt sore when everyone else was complaining, and I could actually feel the muscles I had been working on—and why I had worked so hard on them.

I never physically struggled until the way down, when I got food poisoning and had to take a horse and then a helicopter. Even so, I wouldn’t change anything, because I wouldn’t have done that if I hadn’t gotten sick.

What I really liked about the program was having specific exercises to do, all shown clearly in the app. I also loved the explanations about why I was doing certain things—it made everything make sense. The replies to my emails and the encouragement meant the most to me.

I never felt sore when everyone else in the group was complaining.

I joined the Peak Performance Program because I needed the strategic direction and focus of the programme to get me as prepared as possible to succeed. I seriously considered the Solo Program, mainly for cost reasons, but the holistic content—including nutrition, psychological performance, and a supportive online team of other trekkers and mountaineers—really sold it.

The three biggest results I’ve experienced:

1. Physically, I am leaner and stronger (and don’t ever want to lose this).
2. Mentally, I am much more confident in my ability to take on challenging situations and activities. Honestly, I have exceeded my own expectations of what I am capable of taking on and executing.
3. This one gets a line of its own. I can now think of myself as an athlete (just about), something I previously did not even think about. I am living my best years.

My three favourite things about the program were:
1. The progressive overload. You can see and feel the progress you’re making as you grow through the different phases. I expected the last phase to be super tough, but when it wasn’t, I had an amazing feeling that everything had fallen into place.
2. The nutrition plan, and the realisation that all areas of performance depend on good, balanced nutrition.
3. Having everything mapped out in detail—multiple workouts, meals, psychological performance strategies, a brilliant library—along with Kate’s advice and guidance whenever I got stuck. All I had to do was turn up and work through things. Of course, some of it was tough, but it’s meant to be hard.

EBC was one of the best experiences of my life!

I joined the program because my previous experience on a short trek in Nepal taught me that specific training would be very beneficial—if not crucial—to truly enjoy trekking at higher altitude, especially given my age at 55.

The biggest results I experienced were both physical and educational.

My overall flexibility improved. Squatting became easier (which was also useful for the toilets in Nepal!), and my ankles and knees felt noticeably better.

Leg and glute strength was another major result. During the trek, I had no sore muscles at all, which made a huge difference day after day.
I also developed a much better awareness of heart rate zones and how to train both Z2 and Z5. This didn’t just help my trekking preparation—it also significantly improved my running pace for Hyrox.

Having the app at hand telling me exactly what to do, with clear video instructions, helped me stay consistent throughout the training. I also really valued the opportunity to speak with Kate personally and during the monthly calls—those conversations were very useful.

The program (and Kate) gave me the structure, confidence, and physical preparation to fully enjoy the experience!

I came to Kate as a novice trekker, with an audacious goal — climb Lobuche East, despite having never done a high altitude peak let alone a big expedition! 

Kate guided me to reach my (in retrospect crazy) goal. I started from scratch, with below average fitness levels, fear of falling, AMS, gear issues, and especially, steep slopes. On top of the training plan, Kate also taught me different ascending and descending strategies, breathing techniques, how to develop a “mountaineers mindset”, safety maneuvers, and lots more. Most of all, she supported and encouraged me from day to day. I successfully summited Lobuche East on the 16th October 2022 and will forever remember the feeling of pride and strength despite the serious hard work it took to get to that moment.

Having done a lot of climbing in the Alps, I decided to set my goals a little higher and climb Lobuche East and Island Peak. I was concerned about my fitness and how to best prepare for an expedition vs the alpine climbs that I was used to in the Alps.

I had been following Kate on Instagram for a while and so I knew she was the right coach for me. If you’ve seen her profile then you’ll know how valuable her content is but quite frankly, that doesn’t even touch sides with the tips, advice, planning and crazy amount of high altitude knowledge that she’ll share with you as her client.
Apart from the training plan Kate built for me, I found her positive, upbeat attitude the second most important part of this physical endeavour. They say climbing a mountain is 20% training and 80% mental and I can say from my perspective that those percentages hold true. I was fitter than I've ever been before but most importantly I was mentally stronger than all of the challenges we faced on both peaks thanks to the mindset coaching that Kate took me through in addition to my training.

Before the Start to Summit Program, as a perfectionist if I could not complete every session within the week (e.g life/work got in the way) then I would disengage and end up quitting. I now have a different work ethic - "even if I am only able to commit to one session, then something is a hundred times better than nothing." But reading about Kate's story including her successes and challenges was the real inspiration. She is a role model who I can relate to which enables me to believe that it's possible for me to achieve.

I reached out to Kate as I read about her personal experience and wanted a coach that had themselves been on expeditions and immersed themselves in the mountaineering world. I also wanted someone to be accountable to instead of using a prebuilt programme where you can't ask questions or be called out for not engaging fully in the programme. 

One of my most exciting results has been I am now able to run. I have always strongly disliked running but with a base of six months training with Kate, I decided to try it again and I now really enjoy it. I have even signed up for my first half marathon. I also feel so much stronger and fitter thanks to the structured workouts Kate has set out for me.

I just wanted to write this email to inform you that I was able to successfully complete my EBC trek. It was challenging but your training made it a lot easier. The first 6 days were like a breeze however the last 2 days were brutal. With the altitude hitting more than 13000 ft & reducing Oxygen level were making it more gruesome but I felt like I was ready for it. Only the last day of the climb was a killer when we were at more than 16500 ft altitude and had to still ascend another 1000 ft to reach EBC and it seemed to take forever. 

We are planning yet another trek for Kilimanjaro in November 2025 and would like to get your training assistance for the same. 

Overall, it was a great once in a life-time experience and you certainly had a part in it. I really wanted to personally thank you for that.

Working with Kate as a coach has been invaluable to me. Even though I’d been climbing for years, I was new to the extreme high altitude realm so when I signed up for Baruntse I knew I’d have to up my training and mindset in a massive way. When my original plans to climb Elbrus had to change due to the conflict, it felt like Kate genuinely cared about helping me find the right alternative and worked with me to find an even better adventure. 

The most beneficial aspects of working with Kate were definitely having her deep understanding of Sports Science coupled with mountaineering experience which provided a training plan that was super specific to the type of fitness I needed. On top of that, Kate’s general advice was invaluable - everything from advice on dealing with altitude to tips on tackling those long gruelling days of load carrying - all of which were put into practice on the expedition!

Training schedules are fun, diverse and cover all the different aspects of mountaineering. We also have regular catch ups on the phone about the progress, plans and how things feel which is enjoyable and very supporting. 

If I go to the mountains now, I know that I trained for it with professional guidance and that I have prepared in the right way. I don’t think I would have managed all my ascents in the last 3 years without Kate’s guidance.
